About Us

The Besom exists to be a bridge between those who want to give their time, skills, money, or things to those who are in need.

The Besom is a national charity with bases all around the country. James Odgers founded the charity in 1987, after a trip to Hong Kong, working with Jackie Pullinger. He noticed that the gap between those who have and those who don’t exists not only in Hong Kong, but all over the world. He wrote the Besom vision on the flight on the way home. The Besom in York was started by Rob and Sam 16 years ago.

The Besom in York is a registered charity. Our charity number is 1133905.

The Besom in York Trustees are Neil Hulse (chair), Hannah Ainsworth, Richard Grant, Catherine Spedding (treasurer) Hannah Thompson (secretary).

The Besom in York Team consists of Becky, Maya, Claire and Jonny with Claire, Eliza, Rosie, Stephen and Cheryl (Bundles of Joy) and Carly who is currently on maternity leave.
